Eva Hoffman - 'AFTER GREAT WRONGS: Thinking about the Legacy of the Holocaust Today'

Description: 
Award-winning writer Eva Hoffman will deliver the Leo and Sarah (Bunny) Horvitz Memorial Lecture, speaking about the pre-Holocaust past, especially with respect to Jewish life in Poland, and the post-Holocaust present, including themes ranging from terror attacks in Europe to the Truth & Reconciliation Commission in South Africa. Dr. Hoffman is the author of many books, including Lost in Translation: Life in a New Language (1989), 'Shtetl: The Life and Death of a Small Town and the World of Polish Jews' (1997), 'Time: Big Ideas, Small Books' (2009), and most recently 'How To Be Bored' (2017). The event is co-sponsored by the Center for East-European, Russian and Eurasian Studies, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, and the Program in Creative Writing. A reception will follow.

Jacqueline Vayntrub - Sketching a Poetics of Description in Biblical Literature

Jacqueline Vayntrub is assistant professor of biblical studies at Brandeis University. She received her PhD from the University of Chicago (NELC) in 2015. Her first book, Beyond Orality: Performance and the Composition of Biblical Poetry, is forthcoming with Routledge in the new Ancient Word series (edited by Seth Sanders). Lunch will be provided.
