Jewish Studies Conference Organized by Graduate Students
The Greenberg Center for Jewish Studies runs an annual competition to fund a Jewish Studies conference, initiated and organized by graduate students, to be held during the following academic year. This year's proposals should be submitted by May 8, 2023, for a conference to be held in Academic Year 2023-2024.
The Center will provide the successful applicant(s) with a $5,000 grant; it is expected that the organizers will supplement this grant with money raised from departments, schools, and other centers and sources of funding at the University. The Center will also advise organizers about raising funds and will provide logistical support for the conference.
Eligibility: Ph.D. students from all schools and divisions at the University of Chicago are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to proposals submitted jointly by two or more students from different departments or schools, particularly those that treat inter- or multi-disciplinary topics.
Applications should include:
1. A tentative descriptive title for the conference.
2. A one-page description of possible themes, questions, and topics to be explored in the conference. Please provide as broad a range of topics as possible, with the understanding that it may turn out not to be feasible to cover them all in a one-day conference.
3. Two potential dates (or weeks in quarters) for the conference.
4. A list of possible speakers including external invitees, University of Chicago graduate students, and Chicago faculty (where relevant). The number may vary but should include at least six or seven names.
5. A rough budget for the conference.
6. Names and curricula vitae of the student applicants, including their departmental affiliation and (where relevant) dissertation titles and/or topics.
7. The name of one or more faculty advisors with whom the applicant(s) has discussed the proposal.
Submission details: Proposals for Academic Year 2023-2024 are due by 5:00 pm on Monday, May 8, 2023. Electronic copies of the proposal (submitted as Word or pdf attachments) should be emailed to Nancy Pardee at npardee@uchicago.edu.
