Graduate Research and Travel Grants - Summer 2024

Graduate Research and Travel Grants
Summer 2024

The Greenberg Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Chicago is pleased to announce its annual competition for graduate research and travel grants for projects in Jewish Studies.

Eligibility: University of Chicago Ph.D. students in all Divisions and Schools.

Scope: The Greenberg Center awards grants to students to support their work in any area of Jewish Studies. Eligible expenses include (1) dissertation research travel and materials; and (2) program-related foreign language study in an accredited program. Because funds are limited, priority will be given to proposals in the order listed. Students may combine their awards with funding from other sources to cover expenses. Students who receive FLAS grants can apply for additional funding to cover travel and housing costs.

Application: Applications must be submitted via email no later than Friday, April 26, 2024 to Center administrator, Nancy Pardee (npardee@uchicago.edu). Materials must be sent as Word or PDF files.

The application materials must include:
1. GCJS Cover Sheet
2. Project proposal (no longer than two pages)
3. Rough budget covering the entire trip and demonstrating the use of the total amount being requested
4. Current CV
5. Letter of recommendation from the student’s primary faculty advisor
5. E-mail from the student’s departmental director of graduate studies stating that the student is in good standing

Award: Grants will be awarded by May 15, 2024. The number of awards and the amount of each award will be based on the needs of the strongest applicants. Grant funds should be used by December 13, 2024.

Post-award report: All awardees must submit a one-page report by January 10, 2025.  The report must (1) detail the use of funds and include receipts, (2) describe research progress during the grant period, and (3) explain the impact of the grant funds on that research.
