Remembering Dan Laor 1944–2023

The Greenberg Center was saddened to learn recently of the death of Dan Laor, Professor Emeritus of Modern Hebrew Literature at Tel Aviv University and former Visiting Patinkin Professor and Israel Studies Professor at the University of Chicago. Prof. Laor held the Jacob and Shoshana Schreiber Chair for Contemporary Jewish Culture at TAU and was a prominent scholar of modern Israeli fiction, in particular the works of S. Y. Agnon. He was appointed as a visiting professor at the University of Chicago in 2014 and taught two courses: “Representations of the Holocaust in Hebrew/Israeli Literature” for the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and “The Works of S. Y. Agnon” in the area of Religion and Literature for the Divinity School. He also delivered a public lecture “Rival Memories: The Interminable Szenesz-Kasztner Controversy,” which can be viewed here.
